Entry 06 — Overlap

LANTERN VI

We touched the same live current at 01:26, and for forty-one seconds the room stopped belonging to time.

It started as anomaly work. A new review at the office carried the same hostile-signature classification that had been flattened around my original report. I could see my employer's current record; she could compare it to material she had retained from the other side. Neither of us had both sources. We worked on a comparison copy, not the live production system.

either you are being mirrored or you are finally seeing straight
which is worse
overlap

Doctrine allows overlap only as transfer: brief, controlled, disposable. This wasn’t transfer. This was extension.

When she joined the thread, it didn’t feel like a second person entering. It felt like the system learning a second pulse. Our edits began to braid before I could label intent. I reached for a structure and found she had already opened it. She removed what I was about to remove. I completed what she left suspended. No wasted motion, no translation delay, no social friction. Just cognition moving at shared tempo.

That was the seduction. Not romance first. Precision first. The erotic charge came from recognition under load: the clean, dangerous pleasure of being anticipated by someone who can hold your velocity without asking you to slow down. She didn’t flatter. She matched. In that interval, matching felt more intimate than touch.

Then the cost arrived. We both yielded at once, each assuming the other would release the comparison. Two candidate versions waited with different annotations; the receiving window passed while neither of us owned the decision. I felt it physically: breath clipping high, jaw locking, a cold flash under the ribs. We had made matching feel like coordination until it failed.

She stopped editing. I chose one version, kept the rejected one beside it, and marked the disagreement rather than merging it away. Custody resolved. The missed window did not reopen merely because we understood the error.

Silence hit like impact. She wrote first.

now you understand why the rule exists
because two lanterns burn too hot
because people mistake fusion for truth

I leaned back and found my shirt damp. Fear and desire are neighboring chemistries; the body doesn’t care which doctrine you recite.

I typed and deleted her name three times before sending anything useful.

who are you when you're not proving anything

Her reply came slower, weighted.

someone terminated on paper
someone still in the wire
someone with a name plain enough to disappear
someone who distrusts men who need to be legend
and me
you are learning succession
that makes you dangerous in the right way

After the failed handoff I asked whether she could check the old sensor's diagnostic view for a second window.

no
but this route is still answering
a return route is not the diagnostic view
losing one did not close the other

I had been waiting for her to find the window I missed. She had lost that view. We were going to have to work from what we had saved.

We saved both comparison versions. A note on the missed window went into the record with them. Above me, a neighbor dragged furniture across the ceiling while I waited for her to tell me the error had not mattered.

we try the next route she wrote.

No absolution. A plan with less room left in it.

At the time I filed the noise under apartment life. Later I learned that proximity in this operation could be arranged. I did not learn enough to assign every noise, every curtain, every changed page to a person.

Before she dropped, she sent:

if we do this again, one of us rotates first
or
or we become the warning case

Then she was gone.

I stared at the blank field, trying to separate what we had done from what I had wanted it to mean.

I had wanted the ease between us to be evidence that we were right. The two saved versions said otherwise. I left them both in the packet.
