Entry 09 — Alterations

LANTERN IX

The first alteration I could place against a remembered sentence occupied the end of one line. That was not the same as proving who made it.

I found it at noon, which made it worse. Night belongs to pressure. Noon belongs to consequences. Florida light flattened the apartment into all its least flattering truths: one clean plate, one shirt over the chair back, one body moving through the rooms like it owed explanation to no one and still somehow giving one off.

I had slept two hours with the feed half-open in my head and woke with the legal pad under my cheek.

My last written line from the night before should have read: The route stayed live because I stayed colder than him.

What the page held instead was this: The route stayed live because I refused admiration.

My handwriting, as far as I could judge it. My pen beside the pad. Not the sentence I remembered. Exhaustion, slippage, a correction I had copied and forgotten: each remained possible. I wanted a more definite violation because a violation would at least give the anger somewhere to stand.

I made coffee and let it go cold on purpose, as if the body needed one more small punishment before the mind would tell the truth. In the margin of the pad I wrote an entry I could still account for myself.

Zàijiàn.
Meaning: goodbye.
What I heard: stop speaking.
What he meant: unconfirmed.

I had to leave the pen on the desk to keep from crossing out the last word.

At 14:03 the side channel blinked once.

you write prettier lies in daylight

I did not touch the keyboard.

that line was one of them

My first response was anger because anger still wore the face of privacy when I needed it to.

I typed:

you are inside my notes

The reply came fast enough to feel like it had been waiting for me to admit the right offense.

you are making notes inside a live field

I leaned back and let the chair complain under me.

That was her answer, not an explanation. She had seen pages I showed her and phrases I copied into the channel. I had also started borrowing her syntax when I wrote alone. None of that established a hand entering this room. I put a question mark beside the accusation and left the answer beneath it.

The company kept moving while I argued with the page. An access review appeared against my name. Vale's summary acquired a new heading that made my dispute look like a delay in routine closure. I saved the revision notice to the evidence folder. Unlike the notebook, it came from a system that could be asked for its own account of the change.

I spent the afternoon pulling witness notes into a second notebook I told myself was safer because it stayed zipped shut.

By evening I found a second mismatch between what I remembered writing and what the notebook held.

What I remembered:

Vale wants my hand because he does not know how to make history without a witness to rob.

What I found:

Vale wants your hand because he cannot finish without stealing witness first.

The pronoun shift hit harder than the rest of it. Your, not my. The page stepping back from me just enough to keep me from making private theater out of the wound.

On the facing page, a line from the old notebook had been underlined twice.

English is a language. Bash is a language.

I had written it years ago as if it were a technical observation. It wasn’t. It was a confession about register. About how different selves choose different grammars when they want to survive.

I set the notebook down and wrote raw instead, the way people pray when they have stopped respecting polish.

21:09
second mismatch logged
cause unconfirmed
not harmless
journal is not the source record

I left the lines plain because plainness was all I could trust at that hour.

The side channel woke again after midnight.

show me the raw

I copied the fragment in.

Long pause.

Then:

keep those
raw belongs at fracture only
if you write every entry that way, you will lie by hiding inside the damage

That sentence took something out of me because it named another temptation before I had fully admitted it. A raw record can flatter the self as efficiently as a polished one if the author uses fracture as proof of purity. She was not letting me do either.

I typed:

what is this then

Her answer came back slower, weighted.

a reconstructed manuscript
notes memory wire residue
not a diary
not an affidavit

I copied the answer onto the legal pad. Then I made a separate index for the actual evidence: source, version, how it reached me, what I could and could not verify. The notebook lay beside it. I did not ask one to excuse the other.

Not a diary. Not an affidavit.

That left confession, but even confession had started sounding too clean for what the page had become.

The feed moved again while we were talking. Vale trying to push a sanitized internal story through a review channel he thought had forgotten my smell. He still needed my keyed assent on the last narrow turn. That dependence had become my only clean advantage and the ugliest one: the power to refuse completion without ever being sure refusal would save the right thing.

he is pushing again I wrote.

I know
you can see it
I can hear you when you start reading him aloud in your throat

I shut my eyes.

My microphone was open. She could hear me reading under my breath, and she had learned the catch in my voice around Vale's phrases. That was intimate enough without pretending it crossed a locked boundary inside my head.

I wanted to ask where she was. I wanted to ask whether she was writing me because she loved me or because she did not trust what I would turn myself into if left alone with the draft.

Instead:

leave the worst line in
which one

I looked at the notebook, then at the scratch entry, then at the legal pad.

the one that proves I wanted witness to admire me

Her answer came back almost gentle.

you sent it to me that way
keep your copy

I turned the page.

There it was, crossed once but still visible.

I had thought about removing it entirely. I could not remember whether the cross-out preceded the message. I could still decide to leave the sentence visible now.

I left the crossed-out sentence where I could read it. Whoever inherited these pages would get the vanity with the witness.
