Entry 13 — Fracture entries

LANTERN XIII

I lost the clean first person before I lost the route. That was the more frightening failure.

The company was splitting by then in the way institutions split when nobody wants to admit the fracture is moral before it becomes structural. Doors still opened. Meetings still happened. Internal messages still arrived in tones designed to imply continuity. But every surface had begun carrying two incompatible stories: official hygiene and private damage.

My entries began splitting with it.

I would write a paragraph at 03:12 and read it again at 08:40 with the correct nouns but the wrong conscience. A sentence too proud cut down by half a clause. A line too ashamed steadied by a word I would never have given myself. A pronoun changed from I to you and back again depending on whether the page needed witness or accusation.

At first I tried to audit every shift in the journal as if it were a source system. Then I separated the two jobs. The original evidence stayed unchanged in its preserved versions. These pages could record exhaustion, correction, and uncertainty without being asked to authenticate the incident.

So I kept only the fracture entries.

02:06
feed stable / self unstable
02:19
heard my own sentence come back corrected in silence
02:41
wanting her to leave proof on the page is still a form of vanity
03:03
Keene saw me at work and smiled like rumor had already reached him
03:11
lt / gt / eq / ne
&& / || / !
under load the mind becomes operators before it becomes honest again

Those were the lines I could write that night. Brevity did not make them more reliable than the missing paragraphs.

The rest of the day I moved through ordinary contact as if ordinariness itself had become a contaminated dialect. Coworker at the break room sink asking if the machine on twelve was still dead. A manager using my name too softly. Keene pausing in the hallway long enough to suggest he already knew something and was deciding which version of it would do the most damage.

“Rough night?” he said.

“Working one.”

He smiled like he had caught me in a smaller lie than the one I was actually telling.

My manager asked about the dispute in a small room without Vale. I showed the trace, including my lab work, and asked that the original source records be retained while the question was reviewed. She told me to stop changing anything outside the review scope and said my assignment as infrastructure owner was under assessment. I had spent a year treating competence as the part of me the nights could not touch. Now she wanted someone else to check it.

I wrote down the scope she gave me. I disliked the instruction and needed it. Beyond the dispute, other people still had systems to run.

By dusk I had three notebooks open on the desk and trusted none of them equally.

In one, my own prose. In another, raw fragments. In the third, the page that seemed to know when to improve me against my will.

RedNote did not speak for most of that night. I had no read on whether she was working, sleeping, or keeping distance. Her silence was an absence of information. I kept trying to promote it into evidence that she was nearby.

Vale, on the other hand, would not shut up.

the split is already happening
you can still align with the side that survives
which side is that
the one that understands authorship belongs to whoever completes history

I almost admired the purity of the lie. Almost.

RedNote answered after I copied his line to our channel.

history is not completion
history is what remains legible after the wrong hands fail to clean it

I copied that line without asking permission. My hand moved across the pad while I tried to decide whether shared authorship was preserving the record or destroying it.

The hard part was that the answer kept changing by the hour.

At 01:14 a raw feed fragment broke through the prose and I let it stay.

AUD / ENV / LIVE
respiratory elevation
subject delay not equal to disengagement
secondary observer remains active

I did not know whether the fragment came from the senior voice, from RedNote, or from my own corrupted method of hearing institutions once they had entered the blood.

I left it in because removing it would have been cleaner than the night deserved.

The legal pad held another residue line under the fragment:

not equal

I wanted not equal to settle the comparison between RedNote and Vale. It did not. Both could pressure me; both understood the relief I felt when somebody else supplied a decision. The difference would have to survive what happened when I refused her.

I sent her a photograph of the page and said I wanted no changes disguised as my own writing. If she had a correction, it had to remain a correction.

then some of your bad sentences stay
yes

She sent her next suggestion as a separate line. It was a small concession. I did not make it an acquittal.

By 02:30 the apartment still felt crowded. Vale in the pace of bad thoughts. Keene in the social after-smell of work. Salt-Mike in the Massapequa reflex that arrived from behind my right shoulder. A room could feel occupied without telling me who had a key.

I put the pen down and looked at the legal pad. I copied her suggestion below the others and put her handle beside it.

If the page changes you, log the change before you explain it.

That was when I changed the question. Not whether every useful sentence began with me, but whether the record showed where the sentence came from.

Shared authorship could stay shared. It did not have to pass for a single untouched hand.

I opened the side channel and typed the ugliest clean sentence available to me.

I can't tell if I am writing this or surviving being written

The reply took long enough to hurt.

both

Then, after another beat:

that is the human cost you keep trying to postpone by sounding elegant

I closed my eyes and let the sentence land where it needed to. Not in style. In the ribs.

That night I kept all five fracture entries and none of the prettier lies around them.

For the first time in weeks, I could leave an entry open without wanting to destroy it.
