LANTERN VIII Her arrival ended the journey described in the last entry. It did not end the incident at my company. The next entries cover the shorter crisis that followed, when the packet we had carried ahead of her began turning up in other people's versions. I was

LANTERN VII By the last rotation of her journey back, more than a year had passed since the first terminal message. I no longer believed in clean endings. We had kept a conversation alive through changed routes, long silences, and the damage Vale had done to the relay. Now it

LANTERN VI We touched the same live current at 01:26, and for forty-one seconds the room stopped belonging to time. It started as anomaly work. A new review at the office carried the same hostile-signature classification that had been flattened around my original report. I could see

LANTERN V At 02:17, a dead channel spoke first. I was alone in the Florida apartment, if that word still applied there. Rain worked the metal walkway like a snare drum. The air handler hissed between clicks. Hot dust, old coffee, and the warm-plastic smell of an overloaded

LANTERN IV He introduced himself like a correction. Not loud. Not crude. Calm voice, good suit, perfect pauses. He remembered names on first contact, asked one surgical personal question, and repeated your answer back later like proof he respected you. People called that leadership. I called it indexing. LANTERN II Training began as subtraction through addition of complementing binary and hex sequences. First sleep, then speech, then the parts of myself that needed applause to function — cancelled the way a value cancels against its own complement, not erased by force but added out of existence. Feed 0x88 against

They put me inside something that wasn't mine to be inside of. Not a test environment. Not a sandboxed range built to fail safely. The tunnel opened onto infrastructure that had been sitting occupied, quietly, for longer than a year — segmented in ways no ordinary breach bothers to

LANTERN I · Book I The first trespass was small enough to fit in my palm. I found it on the passenger seat under a streetlamp that turned the windshield into a thin sheet of amber. A metal cutout shaped like an M, or a summation mark if you wanted to
