LANTERN XIV We landed the first preservation objective on a morning that felt too ordinary to deserve it. Florida had already gone white at the edges by the time the final lane stabilized. The lot outside the apartment was busy with nothing that mattered: one man loading bottled water into

LANTERN XIII I lost the clean first person before I lost the route. That was the more frightening failure. The company was splitting by then in the way institutions split when nobody wants to admit the fracture is moral before it becomes structural. Doors still opened. Meetings still happened. Internal

LANTERN XII The next demand came after the annex check. Vale had attached a reassignment request to the review. I could still act as infrastructure owner, but somebody had begun the process that would make my refusal temporary. It moved faster than the room. That was always his tell. Florida
LANTERN XI She used the phrase before I saw her. after coffee first No greeting. No explanation. Just the private code dropped into the side channel at 00:43, the words carrying more charge than they had any right to after all the other things we had survived through language

LANTERN X The archive fragment was only nine lines long and still managed to reach childhood before I did. The fragment came from an attachment to the disputed review packet. It had a title and nine lines, no reliable author or creation history. Review node. subject stability. compliance resilience. Somebody

LANTERN IX The first alteration I could place against a remembered sentence occupied the end of one line. That was not the same as proving who made it. I found it at noon, which made it worse. Night belongs to pressure. Noon belongs to consequences. Florida light flattened the apartment

LANTERN VI We touched the same live current at 01:26, and for forty-one seconds the room stopped belonging to time. It started as anomaly work. A new review at the office carried the same hostile-signature classification that had been flattened around my original report. I could see

LANTERN V At 02:17, a dead channel spoke first. I was alone in the Florida apartment, if that word still applied there. Rain worked the metal walkway like a snare drum. The air handler hissed between clicks. Hot dust, old coffee, and the warm-plastic smell of an overloaded

LANTERN IV He introduced himself like a correction. Not loud. Not crude. Calm voice, good suit, perfect pauses. He remembered names on first contact, asked one surgical personal question, and repeated your answer back later like proof he respected you. People called that leadership. I called it indexing. His handle

LANTERN III My first live handoff came late in that year. It felt like trying to hold a pulse between my teeth. The object was a comparison packet: the callback trace I had saved, the ordinary incident note written around it, and the difference between the two. Someone had classified
